Aarnes Gudmestad
I am Professor at Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) in Blacksburg, Virginia. I also serve as Associate Chair and Director of the Spanish Program in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, and I am the Associate Editor of the Journal of the European Second Language Association. I earned my doctorate from Indiana University. I specialize in second language acquisition and sociolinguistics, and my research explores the intersection of the two fields. My current projects address issues pertaining to morphosyntactic structures (e.g., grammatical gender, the subjunctive-indicative contrast, subject expression, future-time reference) in Spanish and French. They include examinations of multicompetent speakers and analyses of the acquisition of variation. I am also interested in quantitative research methods and the acquisition of lexical competence. My work has appeared in journals such as Applied Linguistics, Language Learning, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, and Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics, as well as various edited volumes and handbooks. I teach courses on Hispanic linguistics, applied linguistics, and Spanish language.
